Underwater Catastrophe, Southwest Florida Reef Investigation
A look at the underwater death toll offshore southwest Florida.
There is an ongoing red tide (Karenia brevis) algae bloom off the coast of southwest Florida and those reading may have been aware of the dead fish and other marine life that are washing up on beaches. We wanted to investigate reef habitats from an underwater perspective to see exactly what was going on below.
On Sept 19th, 2018 we coordinated and executed an offshore dive expedition to observe and document conditions at artificial reefs west of Gordon's pass. The footage in this video is what we observed this day. We encountered dead fish on the sea surface and complete devastation on the sea floor. It appeared that all invertebrate lifeforms were dead.
A big thanks to Collier County and the City of Naples for facilitating this expedition and their data collection efforts. A special thanks to the following:
Katie Laakkonen - City of Naples
Chris Darco - Collier County
Jeremy Sterk - Earth Tech Environmental
Brian King - Collier County

Dive teams recently investigated a selected area of seafloor to determine its suitability for artificial reef placement. The scuba divers swam a large circular sweep pattern to verify no existing natural reef habitat in target zone. Divers also probed areas of the sea floor to help anticipate the stability seafloor and verified adequate vertical clearance to the sea surface. A big thanks to the...

To make a good artificial wreath we used all the hotels along the shoreline on A1A we bulldozed them into the ocean we went ahead and used 50-30 barges plus a old sunken ship maybe ship all the old bridges we used a lot of bridges we've long offshore they make it artificial reefs Bridges the old bridges railroad Bridges all the way up to things all everything was offshore we just bulldozed it into the ocean and backed away 15 ft it's much easier just to bulldoze everything in the ocean it makes it good artificial wreath and we spray it with water and play lots of trees and back away that's all we ever do we bulldoze everything into the ocean or river or Creek it makes a better artificial reef later on a barge we use boats everything goes into the ocean we don't tear it apart we just don't barges and tugboats all day long offshore it makes a better artificial later on for a tax write off rocks no problem you need rocks to support put 295 in put the whole 95 into the ocean it works for us you have more land no more highways no more bridges

Don't waste time collecting...just kill 'em all and keep the lionfish biomass in the reef food chain. A speared lionfish causes a feeding frenzy...moray eel, groupers, sharks, triggerfish eat lionfish. Wounded, dead lionfish will prompt more species of fish to HUNT and eat lionfish.
